Sacramento Grocery Pendulum Swings Back Toward Small, Organic Food Stores

Call them the anti-warehouse stores.

Sacramento's grocery landscape, transformed in the 1990s with warehouse stores like Costco and Sam's Warehouse, is shifting once again. This time, the new players are chains with smaller stores promising organic food at middle-class prices.

Phoenix-based Sprouts Farmers Market and Sunflower Farmers Market, headquartered in Colorado, have both arrived in Sacramento within the past year. Both Sprouts and Sunflower tout a selection of locally grown, organic produce, in addition to their packaged and non-certified offerings.

British-owned Fresh & Easy, promising "wholesome food that doesn't cost your whole paycheck," has announced plans to open up to a dozen stores in the Sacramento area.
