The lychee might not be on your grocery list, but June is peak season for the sweet, white-fleshed fruit grown from Loxahatchee to Homestead.
It's one of about 15 tropical fruits grown commercially in South Florida and has a short season – from May to July – according to the Tropical Fruit Growers of South Florida, a group of about 100 independent growers.
For consumers who want local produce, now is the time to buy many tropical fruits, especially lychees, said David Sui, Palm Beach County tropical fruit extension agent.
"I want local people to get the best taste and cheapest price before they miss it," Sui said.
The lychee, which resembles a rough, cherry-red golf ball, is grown in Palm Beach County at a handful of farms, including Erickson Farm in Canal Point and Milans Farm and Kenari Groves, both in Loxahatchee. Prices are about $3 a pound.
