The app was designed and built by Holland Bulb Farms’ development team and is now available for free at the iMyGarden website or in the Apple App Store. This new iPhone app gives gardeners the ability to see the finished results of their garden design prior to even setting foot in the landscape.
Owner and founder, Jon Studer states, “Our main objective in creating this app was three-fold: First, we wanted to allow people to create unique garden designs with the tap of a finger using their mobile device. Secondly, we hoped to reach out to a younger gardening generation by using technology to showcase just how easy flower bulbs are to grow. Finally, we desired to make it simple for users to purchase the flower bulbs used in their design directly from their phone.”
Being the first of its kind in the flower bulb gardening community, the developers of iMyGarden decided on the slogan “Dream. Design. Dig.” to promote their new tool. The user-friendly interface gives gardeners the ability to “dream” by selecting bulbs from a database of over 200 varieties and “design” by placing them into a user-selected landscape template. The database contains specific planting and care information for each flower bulb to aid in proper plant selection. Preloaded garden templates can be utilized or the user may upload his or her own photo from an existing library or photograph a real-life garden using the iOS device. Once the desired template has been applied and the flower bulbs selected, the screen takes the user directly into his or her garden, complete with background sounds of birds chirping and a gentle breeze. The user then simply touches the screen where he or she wishes to “plant” a bulb and the flowers begin to grow out of the ground. This animation greatly helps the gardener to visualize his or her design prior to planting it. This is important when planning a garden, especially when utilizing flower bulbs which will not be seen above the soil surface until months after the planting process. Once the garden has been designed, the user can then share it with other gardeners through social media networks such as facebook, twitter, and email.
The application's developers are currently working on creating additional features and improving the usability of the app as a whole. Nicholas Sideras, technical director, says “The device currently works on all iOS devices. Our team is looking forward to future releases which will introduce even more innovative ideas and also better utilize the functionality of the iPad devices.”
