A consumer in a European country or a major city in the United States is about to buy a lobster that was caught in the pristine waters of Newfoundland and Labrador.
She wants to know who caught the product and where, when and how the lobster was trapped.
Well, thanks to a lobster traceability pilot project that some lobster harvesters in Harbour Breton and Burgeo are involved with in 2011, the woman can now do just that. She can find out all the information she requires by looking at a small plastic tag on the lobster that has a website address with a code number marked on it.
Some fish harvesters on the west coast of Canada have been participating in fish traceability programs for several years, and now the program has come to Atlantic Canada as some lobster harvesters in the four provinces are participating in the project this year.
