Blueberries are one of the few fruits native to North America. In 1916, Elizabeth Coleman White, the daughter of a New Jersey farmer, developed the first commercial variety of blueberry based on the wild varieties growing in the region. Today, Driscoll's blueberries are grown year-round by farmers in the U.S., including New Jersey, Michigan, North Carolina, Oregon, Washington and Central California and as well as expansion into Mexico, Argentina and Chile. With the warm weather ahead the sweetest season in the U.S. for blueberries is approaching.
Small but mighty, blueberries have the highest antioxidant capacity of all fresh fruits and vegetables. "With flavors ranging from sweet to tart and coloring that spans blue to purple-black, blueberries are the sapphires of fruit," says Frances Dillard, Director of Marketing for Driscoll's. "They're good for your heart, your vision, and they may protect against some cancers."
According to Ms. Wilson, "One of my favorite ways to enjoy blueberries, besides in their natural state, is in dessert. Ripe blueberries, combined with the other ingredients such as natural sugar and organic butter, makes a rich and satisfying final product. As we all know, blueberry pie is an American favorite, and it was this pie that gave me inspiration for my recipe Blueberry Creme Fraiche with Poppy Seed Crust featured in my latest dessert cook book."
