It looks like a cross between an avocado and an artichoke and tastes like a tropical drink – a mix of pineapple and banana, with hints of strawberry, papaya and citrus.
The cherimoya, a South American fruit, deserves to be as a popular as the banana, advocates argue. Writing for the Sacramento Daily Union in 1866, Mark Twain called it "the most delicious fruit known to men."
Today, the cherimoya remains one of the tastiest fruits that most North Americans have never tasted.
Scientists at UC Davis hope their pioneering research on the genetic basis of seedlessness will help change that.
