FERRISBURGH — Dairy farmers J.D. and Cheryl DeVos have 200 milkers, a vision, a business plan and an anchor investor. Now they are looking for a few good localvores interested in putting their money where their mouths are.
The couple are at the money-raising stage to establish Green Mountain Organic Creamery to bottle some of the milk from their pastured Holsteins and Jerseys to sell in Vermont and beyond.
Half the $1 million cost of the project would be borrowed from conventional lenders. The remainder they hope to raise from “slow money” investors: people willing to accept a somewhat slower and lower return on their investments because they value the social and community benefits of strengthening local food production.
