SEATTLE — Come Friday, two locals of the United Food and Commercial Workers will merge.
Auburn-based Local 81, with about 1,500 meat cutters and wrappers in Kitsap, Mason and Thurston counties, will join Local 21, the Seattle-based local made up of grocery-store, retail and health care workers.
UFCW 21 has 35,000 members in Western Washington, 2,682 of them in Kitsap County.
UFCW 21 spokesman Tom Geiger said workers approved the merger earlier this month at the urging of their executive boards. Together, he said, the locals could form a bigger presence at the bargaining table.
"There's more clout and more ability to be more efficient."
