Japanese Comeback Vital For Iowa Meat

For Iowa pork producers, last Wednesday was a particularly bad day.

As the televisions showed horrific images from Japan, pork producers' computers buzzed news that for the second time since the earthquake struck Japan on March 11 the futures market had fallen the $3-per-hundredweight limit on the Chicago Mercantile Exchange.

Investors feared that Japan's demand for U.S. pork would be lost in the rubble and radiation.

Then came news that an Iowa trade mission to Japan beginning April 2 had been canceled at the behest of the Japanese hosts.
