Arcata, CA – Cypress Grove Chevre has won back-to-back top honors for its fresh chevre, making it the best fresh chevre…anywhere. Following up its unprecedented gold medal win for a domestic fresh chevre at the World Cheese Awards this past November, the Northern California cheesemaker scored an impressive 99.40 and was awarded “Best in Class” for Soft Goat’s Cheese at the United States Cheese Championship Contest, held in Wisconsin, March 8-10. The company also took “Best in Class” Flavored Soft Goat’s Cheese for its Purple Haze (a fresh chevre disk sprinkled in an herb blend of lavender and fennel pollen), which scored 99.5. In that same category, Cypress Grove won “Second Award” for it hand-mixed Herbs de Humboldt featuring herbs selected by Cypress Grove’s Founder and Master Cheesemaker Mary Keehn.
“I am so excited to share these awards with everyone at Cypress Grove. The passion for the artisan cheesemaking process that they bring to the creamery every day is what makes it possible for us to compete, and win, in a field comprised of the best of the best in domestic cheeses,” said Keehn. “Our cheese may be made in the European style, but we add our American flair and California finesse to turn the finest ingredients into something that we truly believe to be the best anywhere – at home or abroad. It is an honor to have that belief confirmed with these prestigious awards.”
The United States Championship Cheese Contest is the largest cheese and butter competition in the country and is rooted in more than 120 years of history, beginning when the Wisconsin Cheese Makers Association held its first cheese contest in 1891. In recent years, the event has flourished, more than doubling in size since 2001. This year the panel of 25 expert judges representing 13 states tasted, sniffed and scored a record-setting 1,602 contest entries.
