A bill that has passed the Oregon House would limit the amount that out-of-state services can take from local florists who fill orders.
"We need to do all we can to help local small businesses in these tough times," said Rep. Betty Komp, D-Woodburn, chief sponsor of House Bill 2212. "This bill will make floral order fees more equitable and ensure that local florists are getting their fair share of profits."
Ordering online is the most common way of sending flowers long distance. Big companies rely on local florists to fill orders for them in distant towns. Komp said these interstate companies then take up to 20 percent of the price paid by consumers in exchange for a service that costs the companies little or no money.
