WILLINGTON — A small eastern Connecticut dessert toppings specialty company has taken top honors in a statewide competition to pick the best locally produced food products.
The Purple Pear By Tina, based in Willington, was overall winner for its caramel pecan cream topping in the nonprofit Connecticut Specialty Food Association’s recent annual contest.
The Purple Pear also won last year for its buttered almond cream topping.
This year’s contest included 329 specialty food items in 38 categories ranging from breads and beer to ice cream, olive oil and pasta sauces. Forty judges evaluated the products.
