A much-beloved family owned grocery store closes its doors for good Saturday evening, ending an era for the Cosentino brothers who've run the upscale market since shortly after World War II.
According to Tony Lucia, general manager for Lunardi's Supermarket, his small local chain will take over Cosentino's Market on South Bascom Avenue, although he doesn't have an exact date on when that will happen.
"We were hoping to take over seamlessly," Lucia said. "But we're still in negotiations. Things are complicated. The escrow hasn't closed yet. It's out of our hands."
Still, Lucia promises that his company, a market with Italian roots similar to Cosentino's, won the bid to lease the land and operate markets after the remaining three Cosentino brothers decided to retire after 63 years.
