Higher Meat Prices Could Be Double-Edged Sword For Iowa

You might have already noticed it. If not, you probably will soon. The prices of meat, poultry, fish and eggs are on the rise.

They already shot up by 6.2 percent in 2010, according to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics Consumer Price Index, which measures changes in the prices consumers pay for different items.

And with the first month of 2011 behind us, the prices don't show signs of turning around.

In January alone, prices for meat, poultry, fish and eggs increased by 0.9 percent.

For Iowa — a top national hog producer and in the top 10 cattle producers — this news is a mixed bag.
