The export of Dutch flower bulbs increased by 5 percent in the months July to December of 2010, compared to the same period in 2009, according to data from the Horticulture Product Board. Bulb exports totaled 424 million euro, as 4.3 million individual bulbs were sold.
Exports to EU countries remained at the same level as last year, totaling 197 million. Germany, the EU’s largest importer, saw a decrease in trade of 6 percent however. Retained stocks from last season as well as the early winter are mentioned as underlying reasons by some of the involved Dutch exporters.
Trade with the United Kingdom – the second largest importer of the EU region – did rise, ending up at a value of 35 million euros; an increase of 6 percent. The French imported 4 percent less bulbs however, during the same period.
