Dominick’s parent Safeway is launching a labeling system Wednesday that highlights certain foods based on a 22 ingredients including whole grains or nutritional benefits such as reduced sodium.
Dubbed SimpleNutrition, the program uses green shelf tags to highlight 15 to 20 percent of a store’s food products, based on a variety of criteria.
The Pleasanton, Calif-based grocery chain has put green labels on various products nationwide, and Chicago customers should see the labels in store aisles Wednesday.
“I look at it as having a personal nutritional coach along with shoppers,” said Kerry Neville, a consulting dietician for Safeway. She added that with the variety of nutritional claims in grocery aisles, consumers need assistance to “narrow [their] choices so they can choose the product that the right for their family.”
