Shoppers Can ‘Round Up’ at Checkout to Provide Fresh Milk to Families in Need
More than 500 stores are participating in the month-long campaign from Price Chopper, Redner’s Markets, Shoppers Food & Pharmacy, Safeway and Weis Markets. Signage is posted at checkout with a reminder for shoppers to round up their change to donate to Fill a Glass with Hope.
Fill a Glass with Hope was initiated in 2015 by Pennsylvania dairy farmers in partnerships with ADA North East, PA Dairymen’s Association and Feeding Pennsylvania. Thanks to generous supporters, the program has distributed more than 36 million servings of fresh milk through a network of food pantries, soup kitchens, shelters and feeding programs.
Local dairy farmers helped ADA North East kick off the campaigns in Redner’s and Weis markets. Doug Sattazahn of Zahncroft Farm, Womelsdorf, Pa., attended the launch on June 1, at Redner’s in Sinking Spring, Pa., and Stephanie Knutsen of G&S Dairy, Harrington, Del., was the at the store in Lewes, Del., on June 8.
Pennsylvania Dairy Promotion Program Chair Lolly Lesher of Way-Har Farm, Bernville, Pa., along with Feeding Pennsylvania and PA Dairymen’s Association, participated in the Weis kickoff near Harrisburg, on June 3. Weis donated $5,000 to launch the campaign, plus collected $50,000 in vendor donations to help Feeding Pennsylvania’s member food banks secure milk for their families.
“Dairy farmers are not only committed to producing nutritious, wholesome milk, they believe everyone should have access to it, and that’s why the Fill a Glass with Hope campaign is so meaningful,” said ADA North East CEO John Chrisman who attended the event. “We’re so fortunate for all of our partners’ dedication to the campaign and to the communities that they serve – it’s truly a team effort.”
