The Earthbound Cook Recognized As Best Innovative Cookbook In USA

SAN JUAN BAUTISTA, Calif. (Jan. 17, 2011) — The Gourmand World Cookbook Awards has recognized The Earthbound Cook: 250 Recipes for Delicious Food and a Healthy Planet by Myra Goodman (Workman Publishing) as the winner of its ‘Best Innovative Cookbook’ category in the U.S. Winners qualify to represent their country in the prestigious “Best in the World” competition. Following the announcement of a shortlist in January 2011, The "Best Cookbook of the Year" will be announced at the Paris Cookbook Fair on March 3, 2011.

Open to all countries, authors and publishers of food and wine books, the Gourmand World Cookbook Awards are free to enter. 154 countries participated in this year’s Awards, in a total of 53 categories. Founded in 1995 by Edouard Cointreau, the Awards seek to reward and honor those who “cook with words”, and to identify the best of some 26,000 food and wine books produced annually. According to the organization, the Awards also help publishers with international rights to translate and distribute food and wine books.

Goodman’s new book is a three-tiered resource. A comprehensive recipe cookbook, it is also a helpful reference guide full of easy-to-follow tips, cooking primers, and detailed ingredient information, as well as a guide to help make kitchens more eco-friendly. Woven throughout the book are timely and informative spotlights, sidebars, and tips to educate home cooks on how greener food choices, appliance use, preparation habits, and clean-up can actually benefit the environment.

“I am honored to receive this important recognition,” said Goodman, whose first cookbook, Food to Live By: The Earthbound Farm Organic Cookbook (Workman, 2006), has 125,000 copies in print. “I wanted to inspire and empower readers to not only cook delicious, healthy recipes, but to understand environmental issues without feeling overwhelmed. My advice is easy, effective, and doable on a daily basis. I am thrilled that the Gourmand Awards judges consider this innovation important enough to win the category in the U.S,” she noted.

In addition to the Gourmand World Cookbook Award recognition, Bon Appétit Editor-in-Chief Barbara Fairchild included The Earthbound Cook in her piece on new books of note from Bon Appétit Writers and Contributors. The book also landed in Eating Well magazine’s Editor’s Picks.
