New barricades to block Asian carp and making sure bait shops do not sell Asian carp minnows were among the programs U.S. officials outlined on Thursday to keep the Great Lakes safe from the invaders.
They listed a series of initiatives that are part of a multi-agency $47 million effort in 2011 to keep Asian carp from invading the world's largest collective body of surface fresh water.
Meanwhile, attorneys general from Michigan, Wisconsin, Minnesota, Ohio and Pennsylvania appealed a federal judge's ruling this month that turned down the states' request for a preliminary injunction to immediately close locks and take other steps to seal off the carp-riddled Mississippi River basin from the Great Lakes.
"Although our suit continues to move forward, the urgent threat that Asian carp pose requires that we aggressively pursue this preliminary injunction," said Michigan Attorney General Mike Cox, who has led the legal effort.
