The Bristol Bay red king crab fishery was 99% complete earlier this week, with just one boat still out picking pots, according to the Alaska Department of Fish and Game in Unalaska.
On Tuesday, biologist Nathan Nichols said 46,578 pounds remained in the water, out of a quota of 3.8 million pounds when crabbers first started dropping pots in the water on Oct. 15. A total of 55 boats participated, he said.
This year’s quota, down 12% from last year, is the lowest since 1982, showing a fishery in rough shape in the Bering Sea.
