NORTH SMITHFIELD – The future of Wright’s Dairy Farm and Bakery appears full of activity, with a facility expansion taking shape at the more than century-old family farm on Woonsocket Hill Road.
Earlier this month, Wright’s submitted an application to the North Smithfield Planning Department to place a 3,348-square-foot addition on their existing dairy facility that would expand the building out toward the road. The expansion will allow the business to comply with federal food safety standards and also introduce new products into their dairy lineup, including yogurts and soft cheeses.
According to co-owner Ellen Puccetti, the expansion was prompted by the Food Safety Modernization Act, a sweeping food safety bill signed into law by President Barack Obama in 2011. While the state has been slow to enforce the new standards locally, the law means big changes for small facilities like Wright’s that rely on limited resources to get their products out to the public.
