The University of New Hampshire (UNH) recently opened the doors of its Macfarlane Research Greenhouses, which feature more than one hundred different types of poinsettias.
Researchers at the university conduct experiments on these traditional Christmas flowers each year.
Similar trials take place at universities and greenhouses across the country to help growers evaluate regional differences in the growth and performance of new varieties.
This year, researchers from the UNH Cooperative Extension have been exploring the use of controlled released fertilizers, which could reduce costs and the environmental impact of poinsettia production, according to the Boston Globe.
Names of the flower varieties UNH researchers grow include the Amazon Peppermint, Candy Cane, Red Velvet, Snowberry Punch, Freedom White, Polar Bear and Picasso, among others.
