For 48 years in San Antonio, a love affair has flourished among the owners of Nadler's Bakery and Delicatessen, their customers and the baking profession at large.
You see it in the rich cakes and pastries the couple produces at their bakery on Babcock Road near Callaghan Road, and you see it in the sparkle in Hans Nadler's eyes and the contentment on his wife Minerva's face.
“Every day you create something, and you make people smile,” said Hans Nadler, 80, who learned baking in his native Switzerland. He moved to the United States at 23 because it offered him more opportunities to build a future as a baker. “People are pleased with what you're making. Once you're hooked on it, you stay hooked.”
Local customers have recognized Nadler's dedication to his craft, and statewide and national recognitions have followed. Next year, thanks to the Nadlers' international outreach, the baker's contributions will be recognized worldwide.
