Darden Restaurants filed a lawsuit in federal court Friday accusing Tyson Foods, Pilgrim’s Pride and other companies of a “conspiracy” to increase the cost of chicken meat.
Darden, the Orlando-based parent of Olive Garden and LongHorn Steakhouse, said the companies in the suit worked together to destroy breeder hens and eggs in a coordinated effort to drive down the number of chickens on the market and drive up prices.
Darden, which is seeking unspecified damages, is following several other major food companies that have sued the chicken-producing industry in recent years, including US Foods, Sysco and BJ’s Wholesale and Winn-Dixie.
