Butter prices are coming down again just in time for the holiday baking season after hitting a six-year peak.
Butter was retailing for nearly $4 a pound in recent weeks, as third-quarter wholesale prices rose to levels not seen since 2004.
"It's been crazy, but we're seeing some relief in sight," said Randy Munns, vice president of merchandising and marketing for Skogen's Festival Foods stores.
Brand name butter that a year ago retailed for $1.99 a pound has been costing retailers well above $3, though Munns said the price has begun to drop. He saw a wholesale price below $2 a pound Wednesday for the first time in almost three months.
