Detroit Expansion Continues For Gordon Food Service

Gordon Food Service is heating up competition among Metro Detroit's grocery retailers with plans to expand in the region.

Kroger Co., Meijer Inc. and Wal-Mart Stores Inc. — Metro Detroit's big three of grocers — have already staked their claim in Southeast Michigan, but there's been a greater demand for Grand Rapids-based Gordon's bulk groceries during the recession.

Gordon, the country's largest family-owned food distributor, increased its local store count to 20 with the opening last month of GFS Marketplace stores in Royal Oak and Farmington Hills. The stores will add 70 jobs.

"We're filling in some of the pockets that we weren't able to service," said Kevin Kolenda, Gordon's director of sales and marketing. "We've become more popular with that retail public that's just stocking up."
