Michael Barrett elected Chair of the Dairy Processors Association of Canada Board of Directors

The Dairy Processors Association of Canada (DPAC) is pleased to announce the election of Michael Barrett as Chair of the Board of Directors. Mr. Barrett is President and Chief Executive Officer of Gay Lea Foods Co-operative Ltd. and brings to DPAC 20 years of experience in the dairy industry. Mr. Barrett succeeds Carl Colizza, who served as Chair of the DPAC Board of Directors since March 2017.

University of Minnesota Releases ‘MN-Washburn’ Wheat

The University of Minnesota (UMN) has released a new hard red spring wheat variety called ‘MN-Washburn.’ MN-Washburn features excellent straw strength and good overall disease resistance. In particular, it contains the bdv2 gene for resistance to Barley Yellow Dwarf Virus (BYDV) making in an excellent choice in years when BYDV is prevalent.

Mary and Dave Schmidt were those binding agents for many years at Abby’s Bakery in Wadena. The two were once the owners of the Wadena Bakery on Jefferson Street S., baking in their own businesses for 22 years in Wadena. They were later approached to be the bakers that would start Abby’s Bakery, a central baking system next to Mason Brothers that could distribute baked goods all over the Midwest.

Aldi Moves Into Walmart’s Backyard

Aldi opened a store in Bentonville in October. It’s part of Aldi’s $5 billion plan to expand to 2,500 stores in America by the end of 2022, up from around 1,900 today. Aldi is on track to become the third-largest grocery chain in the country behind Walmart (WMT) and Kroger (KR).
