Uesugi Farms, Gilroy-based grower of peppers, tomatillos, sweet corn, Napa cabbage, strawberries, pumpkins, squash and beans, hosted their ninth annual fundraiser dinner for the Michael Aiello Memorial Scholarship Fund on September 24th, in which they raised $30,000 in net proceeds.

Tour de Fresh Partners With Fort Worth Mayor And Industry Sponsors To Bring Salad Bars To Local Schools

This year’s first local Tour de Fresh Texas event, presented by The California Giant Foundation, was set for Oct. 1, with the goal of raising $10,000 to place at least three new salad bars for local Dallas / Fort Worth schools. In the midst of planning, however, Tour de Fresh saw an opportunity to partner with Mayor Betsy Price of Fort Worth, which would allow for more sponsor costs and donations to go to funding salad bars in the Fort Worth community. With this change, Tour de Fresh expects to donate up to five salad bars.

In 2012, Casey Houweling visited Impact Ministries in Tactic, Guatemala who have established six school sites that offer a strong education to the students in Tactic. Struck by the amount of malnutrition there, Houweling was moved to take action, noting the need to teach the children about nutrition and healthy eating habits. Since then, with the help from KUBO Group, industry partners and donations, a propagation greenhouse was constructed and opened on September 30, 2013. Now, an abundance of vegetables are added to the daily meal program.

The third annual Power Your Lunchbox Pledge by Produce for Kids encouraged families and classrooms to pack more nutritious lunchboxes and make healthy choices this school year. Between Aug. 8 and Sept. 23, more than 21,600 families and classrooms took the pledge to pack a healthier lunchbox, more than doubling the 2015 final pledge count of 10,000 pledges.
