The semifinalists included Phoebe Lawless of Scratch Bakery in Durham and Lionel Vatinet of La Farm Bakery in Cary for Outstanding Baker, a new category created this year to distinguish restaurant pastry chefs from bakers or pastry chefs who own their own businesses.
