AUS: Growers Welcome Supermarket Initiative To Sell Imperfect Fruit & Vegetables At Discount

In Australia, the Woolworths supermarket chain has started selling imperfect, and oddly shaped or sized, fruit and vegetables at discount prices. The supermarket says the initiative will reduce food wastage, allow customers to buy fruit and vegetables at cheaper prices and benefit growers who will be able to sell more of their crop.

PEI Potato Board Elects New Executive

The Prince Edward Island Potato Board has a new executive as a result of its December 10th Board of Directors meeting.  Alex Docherty of Elmwood was elected the new Chairman of the Board, succeeding Gary Linkletter, who completed four years as Chairman.  Alex and his family own and operate Skyeview Farms Ltd., growing seed and tablestock potatoes.  Alex also represents the seed sector for the Charlottetown District on the Board.

US Acadian Redfish, Haddock & Pollock Otter Trawl Fishery Begins MSC Assessment Process

The U.S. Acadian redfish (Sebastes faciatus), haddock (Melanogrammus aeglefinus) and pollock (Pollachius virens) otter trawl fishery has voluntarily entered the Marine Stewardship Council’s (MSC) independent assessment process. If this fishery successfully achieves certification, products from the fishery would then be eligible to carry the MSC’s blue ecolabel.

Trident Seafoods To Purchase Western Alaska Fisheries

Seattle seafood company Trident Seafood Corporation has signed a letter of intent to buy the assets of Kodiak's Western Alaska Fisheries. The transaction will be finalized Dec. 31, 2014.
