On the heels of a recently completed consumer research study, American Lamb Board (ALB) is elevating its 2014 strategic communications program to focus more on educating consumers about the basics of lamb, from cuts and cooking methods to the responsible practices of the industry’s 82,000 shepherds. Dubbed ‘Curriculamb,’ the campaign aims to inspire home cooks to purchase and prepare lamb more frequently. ALB has selected Harvest PR, a Portland, Ore. and Minneapolis-based firm with deep food and agricultural experience, to manage the program.

Floriculture Sustainability Initiative Holds Its First Ordinary General Assembly At IPM Essen

On 30 January, The Floriculture Sustainability Initiative (FSI) held its first Ordinary General Assembly at the IPM Trade Fair in Essen, Germany. FSI brings key industry players together to focus on the developments towards mainstream sustainability in the floriculture sector. Their aim is that 90% of the flowers and pot plants will be sustainably produced and traded by the members by 2020.

Yesterday (February 4th), the U.S. Senate voted to pass the Agricultural Act of 2014, also known as the Farm Bill, by a vote of 68-32. This follows last week’s approval by the U.S. House of Representatives. The bill now heads to the President for signature, expected later this week. For horticulture – which includes fruits, vegetables, nuts, nursery and floriculture production, and Christmas trees – the programs of greatest importance have all received substantial increases, totaling more than $1.1 billion over the next five years.
