With President Obama signing the Agriculture Act of 2014 on February 7th, California’s Prevention of Farm Animal Cruelty Act (Prop 2), a leading animal welfare act passed by voters in 2008, stands firm. The final Agriculture Act does not include a controversial amendment that would have nullified the state specific animal welfare requirements. Thus, egg-laying hens in California must soon be able to turn around freely, lie down, stand up, and fully extend their limbs while confined in their cages.

When Wild Oven Bakehouse owner Daniel Martin opened his bakery’s doors in 2011, he aimed to do one thing: Provide the people of Juneau with bread. Franklin Street’s Wild Oven will go from being a retail shop to solely a bakehouse. The bread will still be baked by Martin and his crew, but instead of selling out of the shop, they’ll sell their goods around town, out of Rainbow Foods, IGA and Superbear.
