US East Coast Scallop Fishery Receives MSC Certification

The U.S. Atlantic sea scallop (Placopecten magellanicus) fishery has been certified to the Marine Stewardship Council (MSC) standard for sustainable, well-managed fisheries following an independent assessment conducted by Intertek Moody Marine. The 14 member companies of the American Scallop Association (ASA) participating in the client group are now eligible to display the blue MSC ecolabel on catch from this fishery.

Senator Lisa Murkowski sent a letter (attached) to the incoming President and CEO of Wal-Mart, introducing him to Alaska’s world-renowned sustainable fisheries – calling it “the benchmark for fishery management.” Her outreach is aimed at advocating that Wal-Mart make an informed decision to continue to bring Alaskan fish to its consumers nationwide, and at inviting the new CEO to Alaska to “see and taste” it for himself.

Rabobank Beef Quarterly Q4: 2014 Outlook – High Global Prices To Continue As Supply Remains Tight

The Rabobank Global Cattle Price Index has risen by 6% since June, driven by lower-than-expected beef supply in the main exporting countries and strong Asian demand. According to a report from Rabobank, supply will remain tight, especially in 1H 2014, driven by lower feed costs, induced herd rebuilding in the US and the strong export demand from Brazil and Argentina, which will continue to support strong prices. In 2014, Rabobank forecasts continued high prices while global beef supply is expected to rise only slightly, meanwhile China's demand for imports are expected to increase. The recent announcements to (re-)open import markets will benefit beef trade going forward.

Creekstone Farms Expands In Arkansas City

Creekstone Farms Premium Beef LLC, one of the largest employers in Cowley County, announced that it will expand its operations in Arkansas City. The beef processing company, which has been based in Arkansas City for over 10 years, currently employs 720 and anticipates hiring an additional 300 workers during the next five years.
