The brutal competition with cheap imported catfish chased many commercial fishermen out of the business, said Collette, but there’s still a demand for wild catfish and an abundant supply of them in Louisiana’s waterways. In 2011, over four and a half million pounds of wild catfish were caught commercially, raking in $2.3 million in sales for the state. But that number pales in comparison to the amount of imported catfish flooding the U.S. market: around 204 million pounds in 2011.

Washington Governor Signs Seafood Mislabeling Bill Into Law

Washington State Governor Jay Inslee signed into law House Bill (HB) 1200, which begins to tackle seafood fraud in the state. Oceana commends Governor Inslee as our recent seafood fraud testing found not only that 18 percent of fish sampled and sold in Seattle was mislabeled, but that seafood fraud is rampant across the nation.

The Clackamas processing plant, along with the company corporate headquarters, will celebrate this anniversary in conjunction with the completion of construction on their adjoining building, as well as the erection of a 3rd building on the premises to be used as a storage annex.

AMSA Honors Dr. Rodrigo Tarté With 2013 AMSA Distinguished Teaching Award

The American Meat Science Association (AMSA) announced that Dr. Rodrigo Tarté is the recipient of the 2013 AMSA Meat Processing Award. The award, established in 1977, is sponsored by Smithfield Foods. Dr. Tarté will be honored at a special reception and awards banquet at the AMSA 66th Reciprocal Meat Conference on Tuesday, June 18, 2013 in Auburn, AL.

Pair Of Beef Boot Camps A Success

In the highly populated Northeast Corridor of the country, the beef checkoff celebrated Beef Month in May by hosting a pair of Beef Boot Camps to educate retailers and foodservice influencers in the region about beef and the beef industry. The first of those was on May 7 in Poughkeepsie, N.Y., followed by a May 15 camp in New Gloucester, Maine for retailers in New England.
