Wisconsin Urging Feds To Buy Cranberries

Congressional leaders on both sides of the political aisle from Wisconsin want the U.S. Department of Agriculture to buy cranberries for school lunches and other nutrition programs. Wisconsin cranberry growers would also benefit from the large purchase.

Mushrooms Can Provide As Much Vitamin D As Supplements

Researchers from Boston University School of Medicine (BUSM) have discovered that eating mushrooms containing Vitamin D2 can be as effective at increasing and maintaining vitamin D levels (25-hydroxyvitamin D) as taking supplemental vitamin D2 or vitamin D3. These findings will be presented at the American Society for Biochemistry and Microbiology annual meeting in Boston on April 22 and also concurrently appear in Dermato-Endocrinology on line open access.

NY Apple Growers Vote By Landslide To Continue Generic Marketing Program

More than three quarters of voting New York apple growers have elected to continue the state’s marketing order, in a referendum conducted by the New York State Department of Agriculture and Markets (NYSDAM).  The vote also continues the work of the New York Apple Association Inc. (NYAA), which NYSDAM contracts to carry out the marketing order’s activities.

Chiquita Brands and Organics Unlimited have formed an agreement to supply organic bananas to the US market under the Chiquita label. This agreement for Organics Unlimited is an expansion of their distribution in the US with organic bananas from Mexico and Ecuador.
