Louisiana blue crab catches are reported more scarce than ever this year, and nobody is sure why. “There are absolutely no crabs,” said Keith Watts, Crab Task Force representative for the Louisiana Seafood Promotion and Marketing Board. “We're not catching anything. It's ridiculous.”

Marine Stewardship Council Launches Consultation On Fishery Standard Review

In spring 2012, the Marine Stewardship Council (MSC) began work to review their environmental fisheries standard. As required in the Food and Agriculture Organisation of the United Nations (FAO) ecolabelling guidelines and the International Social, Environment, Accreditation and Labelling Alliance (ISEAL) standard setting code, the MSC has committed to undertake a periodic review of the MSC environmental standard for sustainable fishing during 2013-14.

Canada Beats New Zealand In US Imports Of Mussels

The United States has long been the primary market for PEI mussel exports, with the northeastern states especially driving demand. Of the mussels consumed in the U.S. in 2011, 48 per cent come from Canada, with New Zealand following at 35 per cent and Chile with 16 per cent, according to the Canadian Aquaculture Industry Alliance’s executive director Ruth Salmon. It took until 2010 for Canada to surpass New Zealand in U.S. mussel imports, but proximity finally prevailed.
