But a tinier — and some might say cuter — citrus fruit is on the verge of knocking lemons and Valencia oranges off their respective perches as the state's No. 2 and 3 citrus crops.

Chile Builds First Solar Energy Plant For Fruit Production

Exportadora Subsole, one of Chile’s most important and innovative fruit traders, is developing a solar energy project in the Atacama Desert to assist in expansion plans for fruit production. Through the use of the solar energy, underground water will be pumped to irrigate new table grape crops grown in desert soil. The energy produced by this photovoltaic plant will allow for new cultivation zones to be developed in the country’s Third Region (Atacama Region), one of the driest areas of Chile.
