FSIS Issues Expanded Alert On Imported Beef Trim From XL Foods

The U.S. Department of Agriculture’s Food Safety and Inspection Service (FSIS) is announcing additional information related to the Sept. 20 Public Health Alert for raw boneless beef trim products imported from Canada that may be contaminated with E. coli O157:H7. FSIS is including two additional production dates in its alert.

General Mills Said Yoplait Is Poised To Make A Comeback In The U.S

General Mills said Yoplait is poised to make a comeback in the U.S., thanks in part to new Greek yogurts and lower prices on certain products. Industry analysts have questioned General Mills's ability to capitalize on the Greek yogurt trend because the company got into the game late; however, company executives said they're pleased with the results so far and noted that the product line is still in its early days. The company plans to launch 40 new yogurts this year, such as its 100-calorie Greek yogurt introduced in August.

Cheese curds are quite the thing in the northern Midwest and Canada. It is said that in Wisconsin, people take bags of cheese curds into the movies to munch like popcorn. They are fun, squeaky, salty little snacks.

Commonwealth Dairy Introduces Light Yogurt

Commonwealth Dairy LLC, located in Brattleboro, VT recently introduced Green Mountain Creamery Light Yogurt with stevia. These light yogurts have 1/3 less sugar than regular lowfat yogurts. Regular lowfat yogurts have 27 grams of sugar (170 calories) per 6 OZ serving, light with stevia has 15 grams (100 calories). Currently the following flavors are available in 6 OZ packaging: Strawberry, Blueberry and Vanilla. The light Vanilla is also available in 32 OZ. The products are available at several universities and institutions in New England and available for retail through Commonwealth’s distribution network.

ABA Urges Congress To Support Sugar Reform

ABA members Hayden Wands with Bimbo Bakeries USA, Mark Worthey with Flowers Foods, and Steve Stocksdale with Krispy Kreme, visited with members of Congress and their staff last week to discuss the Farm Bill and urge reform of the current U.S. sugar program.  Current U.S. sugar policy restricts supplies by limiting imports, with the U.S. Department of Commerce estimating that over 125,000 food manufacturing jobs were lost between 1997 and 2010 due to the impact of the sugar program.
