Ciolo Branded Dips & Spreads Recalled For Potential Health Risk

Sartori Inspirations, LLC, is initiating a voluntary recall of a small number of Ciolo branded products distributed to some Whole Foods Market stores. The items may contain onions from Gills Onions, which may have been contaminated with Listeria monocytogenes, an organism that can cause serious and sometimes fatal infections in young children, frail or elderly people, and others with weakened immune systems. Although healthy individuals may suffer only short-term symptoms such as high fever, severe headache, stiffness, nausea, abdominal pain and diarrhea, Listeria infection can cause miscarriages and stillbirths among pregnant women.

European Food Safety Authority Gives Barry Callebaut Positive Opinion On Cocoa Health Claim

Barry Callebaut announced that the European Food Safety Authority (EFSA) issued a positive opinion on the company’s health claim dossier submitted last year. Barry Callebaut received a health claim that “cocoa flavanols help maintain endothelium-dependent vasodilation which contributes to normal blood flow.” The company was able to provide evidence that the intake of 200 mg of cocoa flavanols (provided by 2.5g of high-flavanol cocoa powder or 10g of high-flavanol dark chocolate) positively influence blood circulation in the human body. Barry Callebaut is the first company in the EU to obtain a positive Scientific Opinion on a health claim on cocoa flavanols.
