The Senate is likely to vote to end a small but controversial catfish inspection program next week, saving $14 million annually and potentially preventing a trade war with Vietnam.

Consumers Appear Indifferent To Country-Of-Origin Labeling For Shrimp

Under the Tariff Act of 1930 and subsequent amendments, consumer-ready packaged foods must indicate whether the foods come from the United States, from another country, or from mixed origins. Until the last several years, random-weight products, such as loose produce, store-cut and packaged meats, and seafood from a store’s fish counter, were not required to have country-of-origin labels. Proponents of these labels assert that consumers view the U.S. label as an indication of safety, quality, or as a means of supporting U.S. producers.

Canada’s meat and egg processors welcome the introduction of Bill S11 the Safe Food for Canadians Act. “Food safety is the number one priority of Canada’s red meat, poultry and egg processors” stated Canadian Meat Council Executive Director Jim Laws, Canadian Poultry and Egg Processors President and CEO Robin Horel and Further Poultry Processors Association of Canada General Manager Robert DeValk. “We fully support actions to consolidate and modernize CFIA’s suite of food commodity legislation.”

Sixty-Eight Poultry Facilities Recognized For Outstanding Safety Performance

The Joint Industry Safety and Health Council recognized 68 chicken and turkey facilities for outstanding safety performance through the implementation of innovative and effective safety and health programs. The annual safety awards were presented during the 2012 National Safety Conference for the Poultry Industry held in Ponte Vedra, FL.

Meat Industry Hall Of Fame Names Class Of 2012

The Board of Trustees has announced that 12 new Members have been elected to the MEAT INDUSTRY HALL OF FAME. The Class of 2012 was chosen from a list of more than 60 nominees in voting last month by the Trustees and living Members of the Hall. The nominees included industry executives, scientists, innovators and association leaders from all sectors of the livestock, meatpacking and poultry processing industries.
