USDA Targeting Six Additional Strains Of E.coli In Raw Beef Trim Starting Monday

The U.S. Department of Agriculture's (USDA) Food Safety and Inspection Service (FSIS) next week will begin instituting a zero-tolerance policy for six additional strains of E. coli that are responsible for human illness. Beginning Monday, FSIS will routinely test raw beef manufacturing trim, which is a major component of ground beef, for the six additional strains of E. coli. Trim found to be contaminated with these pathogens will not be allowed into commerce and will be subject to recall.

Dr. Melvin Hunt Honored By AMSA With R. C. Pollock Award

The American Meat Science Association (AMSA) has announced Dr. Melvin C. Hunt of Kansas State University is the recipient of the 2012 American Meat Science Association (AMSA) R. C. Pollock Award, presented annually in honor of the first general manager of the National Live Stock and Meat Board.  Dr. Hunt will be honored at a special reception and awards presentation at the AMSA 65th Reciprocal Meat Conference on Tuesday, June 19, 2012 in Fargo, ND.

Restaurant Industry Outlook Positive As Restaurant Performance Index Stood Above 100 For 6th Consecutive Month

The outlook for the restaurant industry remained positive for the coming months, as the National Restaurant Associations Restaurant Performance Index (RPI) stood well above 100 in April. The RPI a monthly composite index that tracks the health of and outlook for the U.S. restaurant industry stood at 101.6 in April, down 0.6 percent from the strong level of 102.2 registered in March. Despite the decline, April represented the sixth consecutive month that the RPI stood above 100, which signifies expansion in the index of key industry indicators.
