A marine resource management coordinator with the Maine Department of Marine Resources, DeGraff was in Washington County on Tuesday soliciting advice from scallop fishermen in East Machias and Jonesport on how best to prevent overfishing while allowing for enough catch to sustain the local economy.

MSC Celebrates Mexican Fishery Certification During Ninth Annual Aquamar International Conference

On October 26, 2011 in Hermosillo, Mexico, at the opening ceremony of the ninth annual Aquamar International Conference attended by hundreds of fishing industry leaders and government officials, the Mexico Gulf of California Pacific sardine fishery–the largest volume fishery in Mexico–officially received its MSC certificate.

Oregon Seafood Boom Hits 23 Year High

Any way you fillet it, Oregon’s commercial seafood and fishing industry had an outstanding year in 2011. For many fisheries, both the volume harvested off the Oregon Coast and the corresponding dollar value were the best in decades. A total harvest value exceeding $145 million for all Oregon fisheries has given coastal economies from Astoria to Brookings a much needed shot-in-the-arm.

Minneapolis Whole Grains Summit 2012 Report

Last week Oldways President Sara Baer-Sinnott and I participated in the Whole Grains Summit 2012 held in Minneapolis, along with 300 others from 18 countries. Organized by the Grains for Health Foundation, this event was packed full of thought-provoking presentations and discussions for those of us (like yours truly) who are fascinated by every aspect of whole grains.

Massachusetts Awards Workforce Training Grant To Jacqueline's Gourmet Cookies

Salem's Jacqueline's Gourmet Cookies, located in an office park on Swampscott Road, was awarded $100,650 to train 73 employees. The company expects to create 13 jobs, according to the state. Jacqueline's Gourmet Cookies is a wholesale company that sells frozen products, including cookies, scones and biscuits, that are retailed under private labels, often in the bakery sections of supermarkets.
