Specialty Grocers Eyeing, But Still Not Buying, Downtown L.A.

This month, budget-oriented retailer Smart & Final signed a 20-year lease for the space previously eyed by Whole Foods. It will open in the first quarter of 2013. The planned 25,000-square-foot Smart & Final Extra will expand local grocery options, as the store will have more perishables, fresh food and deli items than the Commerce-based chain’s traditional bulk goods outlets. Still, it does little to sate what some Downtown stakeholders say is a strong hunger for more specialty and upscale markets.

As Stores Expand Grocery Offerings, Independents Find More Competition

Grocery stores are popping up in Ventura County, while discount retailers such as Dollar Tree and 99 Cents Only Stores and supercenters like Target and Walmart expand their fresh and frozen offerings. As the competition grows, independent store owners are feeling the revenue crunch. They say they face cutting costs or finding innovative ways to entice customers.

ANSI Z50.2 Sanitation Standard For Bakery Equipment Is Posted For Public Comment

Over the past year, more than 70 individuals have worked on revising and updating the ANSI Z50.2 standard. This standard, formerly known as the BISSC standard, sets the parameters for the design, construction and installation of bakery equipment that is more efficient to operate, clean, and maintain, and reduces the risk of quality issues, product recalls and even foodborne illness outbreaks.
