Luring Shoppers Hooked On Fish

Hannaford Supermarkets is now guaranteeing that all its seafood, from fresh salmon to canned tuna, is sustainably harvested. The policy covers all 2,500 kinds of fish the chain sells, whether fresh, frozen, canned or packaged. George Parmenter, manager of sustainability for the Maine-based chain, said Hannaford does not want to contribute to causing fish populations to decline.

NOAA Increases Gulf Of Mexico Red Snapper Catch Limit

Following an updated population assessment that shows overfishing of Gulf of Mexico red snapper has ended and the population is rebounding, NOAA is increasing the 2012 commercial and recreational fishing catch limits for the species from 7.53 million pounds to 8.08 million pounds. The new rule takes effect June 1.

Despite windy conditions and choppy seas, shrimp effort increased on opening day of Mississippi’s shrimp season, which began at 6 a.m., May 30, 2012, one of the earliest shrimp season openings on record.
