The third national meeting of Florists For Change Inc. was held March 4-6, 2012 at the Amway Grand Plaza Hotel in Grand Rapids, MI. The meeting was positive, productive, and well-attended, including several prospective members who joined during the conference. Members shared stories of recent challenges and success, particularly related to technology, internet advertising, and wire order transmission. Approved vendors were able to connect directly with FFCI florists who are looking for progressive alternatives to their current technology environment.

In the last few weeks, there’s been a lot of hype in the press surrounding several large companies committing to phasing out gestation crates at their pig facilities by 2017; we think this is very encouraging news. At Whole Foods Market®, we’ve prohibited the use of both gestation and farrowing crates by all of our pork suppliers since 2003. While it’s good to see more companies finally jumping on the bandwagon, it can’t happen soon enough, in our opinion!

Applegate Praises Court For Ordering FDA To Address Antibiotics In Food Animal Production

Applegate applauds the decision by a federal judge instructing the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) to withdraw approval for tetracyclines and penicillin in food animal production. The ruling comes from a lawsuit filed by the Natural Resources Defense Council (NRDC), Center for Science in the Public Interest (CSPI), Food Animal Concerns Trust (FACT), Public Citizen, and Union of Concerned Scientists (UCS) last year.
