USDA Awards Grant To University Of Nebraska-Lincoln For E. Coli Research

The U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) announced that it has awarded a research grant to the University of Nebraska-Lincoln (UNL) to help reduce the occurrence and public health risks from Shiga toxin-producing E. coli (STEC) along the entire beef production pathway. Dr. Chavonda Jacobs-Young, acting director of USDA's National Institute of Food and Agriculture (NIFA), is scheduled to award the $25 million grant to the UNL-lead research team today at the university in Lincoln.

SFP will work with the Ipswich Shellfish Group to develop a seafood procurement strategy geared toward offering the most sustainable sources of wild-caught and farmed seafood to their customers.

MSC Responds With Corrections Regarding ASMI Statements

On Tuesday, January 17, the Alaska Fisheries Development Foundation (AFDF), the client for Marine Stewardship Council (MSC) certification of Alaska salmon, announced that seven of 43 members of the client group are withdrawing support for independent assessment for a third consecutive MSC certification for sustainability. Since then, the Alaska Seafood Marketing Institute (ASMI) has made statements about its own, locally developed scheme compared to the Marine Stewardship Council’s global standard for the certification of sustainable and well-managed fisheries.
