Taste For Maine Lobster Growing Halfway Around The World

Peter Yee and Steven Yip have moved into the old Wildcat Lobster Pound in Tenants Harbor and plan to start shipping product to Asia in the coming months. Company spokesman and manager Denny Smith says the operation should be in full swing by June, when a further 4 to 6 full-time employees will have to be hired. And because of the costs of transporting live lobsters and seafood half-way around the world, Smith says the plan is to ship a lot of them.

Georgia DNR Extends Food Shrimp Season

Commissioner Mark Williams has announced that Georgia's food shrimp harvest season will be extended beyond December 31, 2011. The extension may continue through February 29, 2012 if biological and environmental conditions remain stable. Monthly research surveys will continue to be conducted to monitor conditions and adjust the closing date as needed. Trawlers may continue to harvest shrimp in the Atlantic Ocean eastward of the sound-beach boundary. Individuals who use a cast net or a beach seine may also continue to harvest food shrimp.

Two Colombian Flower Farms Go Under

Last month, the Americaflor Group was declared in reorganization under Colombian law due to an inability to cope with ongoing financial difficulties. Two of the group's flower farms have now been liquidated definitively, however, by order of the Colombian Superintendent.
