Only nine facilities in the state are USDA approved, with the nearest in Roseburg and Eugene. Legally, meat can be sold for retail only if it has been slaughtered and processed under federal inspection. A local USDA facility would be an alternative to shipping cattle to the Midwest, where about 90 percent of Oregon’s beef goes for processing.

American Food Service, a Pico Rivera, Calif. establishment, is recalling approximately 3,170 pounds of fresh ground beef patties and other bulk packages of ground beef products that may be contaminated with E. coli O157:H7, the U.S. Department of Agriculture’s Food Safety and Inspection Service (FSIS) announced today.
