Labelling Stringency of the FDA
Nashoba Brook Bakery in West Concord was issued a warning letter by the United States Food and Drug Administration (FDA) for violating the norms under improper labelling law. The bakery had added ‘Love’ as an ingredient on its label of granola food products. The FDA said in its warning letter to the bakery’s owner that since it has clearly mentioned ‘Love’ on the labels of granola products, it is violating the laws for labelling, wherein only the actual names of ingredients must be mentioned. As the ingredient ‘love’ cannot fall under the ingredients category, the bakery and its owners have now become a matter being intervened by the FDA. According to the bakery’s website, it was opened in 1998 by two friends, Stuart Witt and John Gate – who have coincidentally completed law from University of Virginia off recently. The bakery holds 275 wholesale accounts and currently has over 50 employees. The work environment policy in this bakery is innovative, however, the FDA was not appealed by the company in the jovial list of the bakery ingredients. In remark to the FDA, the company’s chief owner, John said that since 20 year they are selling these products, and has been selling them for so long the love label was listed in the ingredients.
