It’s A Food Revolution

I heard about Jamie Oliver’s Food Revolution, the new reality TV show, and decided to tune in. Basically, Oliver — best known in this country for cooking shows on the Food Network — descends on the city of Huntington, WV, which has earned the dubious title of “Unhealthiest City in America.” The show is about Oliver’s attempts to change the eating habits of its inhabitants, one child at a time. His first campaign of this sort — called Jamie’s Ministry of Food — was in the English town of Rotherham.

I am not a fan of reality TV, but this one piqued my curiosity. I know firsthand that our eating habits have gotten out of hand; the average diet has too much fat, sugar and salt and not enough whole grains, fruits, veggies and lean protein. We are getting fatter, our children are getting fatter, and obesity is a national scourge. If Jamie Oliver has a working solution, I’m all for hearing it, even if I must put up with the inaccuracy and the overblown drama of “good” TV.
